Sambalpur Hottest as Heatwave Scorches Odisha

Heatwave Grips Odisha; Sambalpur Sizzles at 42.9°C

Odisha reeled under intense heatwave conditions on Monday, with temperatures soaring above 40°C in at least 17 locations across the state, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Sambalpur emerged as the hottest place, registering a scorching 42.9 degrees Celsius. The IMD’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar issued heatwave warnings for several districts, urging residents to take necessary precautions.

Hirakud followed closely behind at 42.4°C, while Jharsuguda and Bolangir recorded 42.2°C and 42.1°C, respectively. Other cities such as Titlagarh, Bhawanipatna, and Angul also witnessed sweltering temperatures above 40°C.

The weather department attributed the ongoing heatwave to dry westerly winds and clear skies, which are trapping heat and pushing mercury levels higher.

Authorities have advised people, especially the elderly and children, to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities.

With no immediate relief in sight, the IMD has predicted that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist in western and interior Odisha over the next few days.
