Gavaskar: Rohit, Kohli Won’t Return

Rohit, Kohli Unlikely to Feature in 2027 World Cup: Gavaskar Backs Bumrah as Future Test Captain

Legendary former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that senior cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are unlikely to feature in the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, despite speculation about a potential comeback in the format following their Test retirements.

Speaking to Sports Today, Gavaskar stated that he doesn’t foresee the iconic duo returning for the next 50-over World Cup, set to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

“No, I don’t think they will be playing,” Gavaskar said, putting to rest growing hopes that Rohit and Kohli might extend their ODI careers with an eye on one final global appearance.

Rohit and Kohli recently announced their retirement from Test cricket, following India’s loss in the five-match Test series against England. They had earlier retired from T20 internationals after the 2023 ICC T20 World Cup. While fans speculated that these moves might be strategic to prolong their limited-overs careers, Gavaskar believes otherwise.

The batting great praised both players for their immense contributions to Indian cricket but suggested that the focus should now shift to grooming future leaders and performers.

Backing pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for a leadership role, Gavaskar said the fast bowler has the tactical acumen and temperament needed to lead India in Test cricket.

“Bumrah has shown great maturity and understanding of the game. If fit and available consistently, he’s a strong candidate for the Test captaincy,” Gavaskar added.

With Rohit and Kohli likely to bow out before the 2027 ODI World Cup, the Indian team management will be tasked with building a new core of players capable of taking the legacy forward. Gavaskar’s endorsement of Bumrah as a red-ball leader could influence selectors in shaping the next era of Indian cricket.
