Rudrajit Roy’s Pinjar Captures Caged Souls

Doctor-Turned-Filmmaker’s ‘Pinjar’ Explores the Caged Human Soul

Doctor-turned-filmmaker Rudrajit Roy has captivated audiences with his thought-provoking film ‘Pinjar’, which draws a powerful analogy between caged birds and the human soul imprisoned by prejudice and ignorance. The film was screened under the Bengali Panorama section at the 31st Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF).

Roy, who balances a career in medicine with filmmaking, said the inspiration for Pinjar came from the realization that human beings, though seemingly free, often live trapped by invisible cages of superstition, feudal values, and lack of true education.

“Just like birds confined within cages, our souls remain bound by the limitations we create for ourselves and by society,” Roy told reporters after the screening.

Featuring acclaimed actor Mamata Shankar in a special appearance alongside Joy Sengupta and others, Pinjar uses powerful imagery and symbolism to depict the internal and societal struggles that restrict human freedom and growth.

The film’s universal theme and visual storytelling have earned it selections at several prestigious international festivals, including the 16th Chicago South Asian Film Festival, Indian Film Festival of Sydney, International Indian Film Festival of Toronto, and the Asian Film Festival Barcelona.

With Pinjar, Rudrajit Roy continues the tradition of socially conscious Bengali cinema — blending art, introspection, and empathy to explore the deeper truths of human existence.
