Prohibitory Order Imposed at Cremation Ground in Odisha’s Ganjam
In a decisive move to prevent communal tensions, the Ganjam district administration has invoked Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) at a cremation ground in Talapatna village. This order prohibits the assembly of four or more persons at the site, following conflicts between two local communities.
The prohibitory order, effective from Monday, was enacted by Bhanjanagar sub-collector Anil Kumar Sethi. The decision came after escalating tensions over one community’s opposition to the entry of another into the cremation ground, raising concerns of potential conflicts.
“The situation was becoming increasingly volatile, and we had to take preventive measures to maintain peace and order,” explained a police officer on Wednesday. The restriction is aimed at diffusing the current situation and preventing any untoward incidents that could arise from the communal discord.
Reports indicate that the tension began when members of one community attempted to restrict access to the cremation ground, traditionally used by multiple communities. The move was met with resistance, leading to the involvement of the local administration and law enforcement to avert a larger conflict.
Local authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with the imposed restrictions. “Our priority is to ensure the safety and harmony of all residents. We are monitoring the situation closely and will take necessary actions to maintain peace,” stated sub-collector Anil Kumar Sethi.
The district administration, alongside the police, continues to work towards a peaceful resolution, engaging with community leaders to foster dialogue and understanding. Meanwhile, the prohibitory order will remain in effect until the situation is deemed stable.
Residents are advised to adhere to the order and avoid gatherings at the cremation ground to prevent any legal consequences. The administration reassures the community that these measures are temporary and are in place solely for maintaining communal harmony and public safety.
