President stresses future-ready police for Viksit Bharat

Future-Ready Police Force Key to Building ‘Viksit Bharat’: President Murmu
President Droupadi Murmu on Monday said that a future-ready police force led by young officers will play a crucial role in the making of Viksit Bharat, as she addressed the probationers of the Indian Police Service (IPS) 77 RR (2024 batch) at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Highlighting the importance of law and order in economic development, the President said that effective policing is as vital as economic incentives for attracting investment and ensuring sustained growth. “Law and order is a necessary precondition for attracting investment in any state or region. A future-ready police force led by young officers will play a major role in the making of Viksit Bharat,” she said.

President Murmu reminded the young officers that authority comes with accountability, urging them to uphold ethical standards and fairness in all circumstances. “Your actions and conduct will always be under public scrutiny. Choose what is ethical, not what is expedient,” she advised, adding that moral integrity and fairness would earn them lasting respect and trust.

She also cautioned officers against becoming desensitised due to frequent exposure to crime, stressing the importance of retaining compassion and humaneness in policing.

Referring to the growing role of technology in law enforcement, President Murmu noted that digital threats have transformed the landscape of policing. “Just about ten years ago, the expression ‘digital arrest’ would have been impossible to understand. Today, it is one of the most dreaded threats to citizens,” she said.

Urging the officers to stay ahead in adopting new technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), she emphasised that the police must outpace those who misuse such tools for wrongful purposes.

The President concluded by expressing confidence that the new generation of IPS officers would lead the country’s police forces with integrity, empathy, and technological acumen, helping shape a safer and stronger India.
