PM Modi receives Ghana’s highest honour

Prime Minister Modi Conferred Ghana’s Highest Civilian Honour

New Delhi / Accra, July 3, 2025In a landmark moment for India-Ghana relations, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was conferred the ‘Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’, the West African nation’s highest national honour, by President H.E. John Dramani Mahama in Accra on Thursday.

The prestigious award recognises Prime Minister Modi’s distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership, acknowledging his pivotal role in strengthening India’s international presence and promoting South-South cooperation. The honour was conferred during PM Modi’s ongoing historic State Visit to Ghana — the first by an Indian Prime Minister in several decades.

Accepting the honour, Prime Minister Modi expressed deep gratitude and dedicated the award to the 1.4 billion citizens of India, especially its vibrant youth, rich cultural heritage, and the spirit of unity in diversity that defines the country. He also paid tribute to the long-standing historical and cultural ties between India and Ghana, which have evolved since the era of the Non-Aligned Movement and continue to flourish across trade, education, and development partnerships.

A Deepening Strategic Partnership

In his remarks, the Prime Minister said that the honour symbolised the deep-rooted friendship and shared democratic values between the two nations. He emphasized that it places a greater responsibility on both sides to nurture and elevate the partnership to new heights.

“The recognition strengthens our mutual commitment to global peace, inclusive growth, and people-centric development,” he noted. “It also motivates us to expand cooperation across sectors like digital technology, energy, education, health, and capacity building.”

Historic Visit to Usher New Era

PM Modi affirmed that his State Visit to Ghana would impart fresh momentum to bilateral relations, exploring new avenues of collaboration in the spirit of South-South cooperation. The visit is expected to result in multiple agreements, people-to-people initiatives, and economic partnerships aligned with Ghana’s national development goals and India’s Africa outreach policy.

The conferment of Ghana’s top honour to Prime Minister Modi is not only a reflection of his growing stature on the global stage but also a powerful reminder of India’s enduring role as a partner of choice for many developing nations across the Global South.

The Order of the Star of Ghana is the country’s highest national honour, awarded to individuals for exceptional service to the Republic of Ghana. Past recipients include global leaders and statesmen who have significantly contributed to strengthening Ghana’s bilateral and multilateral engagements.
