PM Modi to Meet Economists Ahead of 2026–27 Union Budget

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting with eminent economists and sectoral experts on Tuesday to seek their inputs and suggestions ahead of the Union Budget for 2026–27, a senior government official said.

The consultation is part of the government’s pre-Budget exercise aimed at incorporating expert views on key economic challenges, growth priorities and sector-specific reforms. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to present the Union Budget for 2026–27 in Parliament on February 1.

The upcoming Budget will be framed against a challenging global backdrop marked by geopolitical uncertainties and trade-related pressures. In particular, the imposition of a steep 50 per cent tariff by the United States on shipments from India is expected to weigh on export-oriented sectors and overall economic sentiment.

Officials said the discussions are likely to focus on sustaining economic growth, managing inflationary pressures, boosting domestic manufacturing and exports, and strengthening India’s resilience amid global headwinds. Inputs from economists and experts are expected to help shape policy priorities and fiscal strategy for the next financial year.

The Prime Minister has held similar consultations in previous years as part of the government’s effort to make the Budget process more inclusive and responsive to evolving economic realities.
