Outrage Over Jagannath Doormat on AliExpress

Outrage in Odisha Over Jagannath Image on Doormat; State Demands Apology from AliExpress
A major row has erupted in Odisha after it was discovered that Chinese e-commerce platform AliExpress was selling doormats featuring the image of Lord Jagannath, a deeply revered deity and cultural icon of the state.
The controversy sparked widespread condemnation, with Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida strongly criticizing the platform for what she called an offensive and disrespectful act. She demanded an immediate apology from AliExpress and the removal of the product listing.
Taking to social media platform X, Parida wrote: “Mahaprabhu Jagannath is deeply connected to the soul and emotions of every Odia. I strongly condemn Chinese e-commerce platform @AliExpress_EN for selling doormats featuring Mahaprabhu Jagannath’s image. @AliExpress_EN must remove the listing immediately and apologise to devotees for this offensive act.”
The depiction of Lord Jagannath — considered the presiding deity of Odisha and worshipped by millions — on a doormat has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of devotees. Several citizens, activists, and religious organizations have also expressed outrage and called for a boycott of the platform.
The Odisha government has reportedly taken up the matter with appropriate authorities and is exploring diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure accountability.
Meanwhile, social media users have launched a hashtag campaign demanding respect for religious sentiments and stricter monitoring of online platforms selling religious imagery.
