Orphaned Siblings in Ganjam Seek Odisha Government’s Help for Survival

Four minor siblings in Odisha’s Ganjam district are pleading for government assistance following the tragic death of their father, Subala Behera, on September 23. The children – Khusi Behera (17), his sisters Lushi (15), Mamali (13), and brother Mahabir (11) – have been left orphaned, with their mother, Puspa, having passed away five years ago.
Subala, a daily laborer, had been struggling with health issues prior to his death, leaving the children under the care of their 70-year-old grandmother, Laxmi. Laxmi, who sells fish to earn a meager income, has been unable to meet the daily expenses of her four grandchildren. The family is also struggling with their dilapidated house in Bhanjanagar town, Ganjam district.
“With my limited income, it is difficult to provide for the children, especially with the growing costs of food, education, and shelter. We urgently need help,” said Laxmi, expressing her hopes for government intervention.
The family’s plight has garnered attention from local communities and officials, raising hopes that the state government may soon step in to provide the necessary financial and housing support. Authorities are expected to assess the situation and explore potential welfare schemes to help the orphaned minors survive and continue their education.
