Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra Conferred Honorary Rank of Lieutenant Colonel in Indian Army

India’s Olympic gold medallist and star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was on Wednesday conferred with the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army, in recognition of his outstanding achievements and service to the nation.
The pipping ceremony, held in New Delhi, was presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who described Chopra as an “epitome of perseverance and national pride.” The ceremony was also attended by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and several senior officers of the Indian Army.
Neeraj Chopra, who serves in the Territorial Army, first joined the Indian Army as a Naib Subedar on August 26, 2016. He was later promoted to Subedar in 2021 and Subedar Major in 2022.
Speaking on the occasion, Defence Minister Singh lauded Chopra for bringing global glory to India through his historic Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020, which marked India’s first-ever medal in athletics. He also praised Chopra’s discipline, humility, and role as a youth icon who inspires millions across the country.
The honorary commission adds yet another feather to Neeraj Chopra’s illustrious career, cementing his place as one of India’s most celebrated athletes and a symbol of excellence both in sports and national service.
