Odisha Towns Intensify Demand for NAC

The demand for Notified Area Council (NAC) status has gained momentum in Odisha after Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s Independence Day announcement to create 21 new NACs in the state.

In his August 15 address, the chief minister had declared that 21 new NACs would be formed to strengthen urban governance. Following the announcement, the Housing and Urban Development Department issued draft notifications for 12 NACs across seven districts.

However, with the government yet to notify the remaining nine NACs, the demand has intensified in several towns. Political outfits, citizens’ forums, and local organisations have begun mobilising public support, pressing the state government to expedite the notification process.

On Thursday, three towns witnessed bandh calls backed by local organisations, bringing normal life to a halt. Protesters said the delay was creating uncertainty and alleged that their regions were being neglected despite fulfilling eligibility criteria.

The agitators have urged the state government to ensure early notification, warning of intensified protests if their demand is ignored.

The issue of NAC formation is expected to gather further political traction in the coming weeks, with more towns likely to join the movement.
