Odisha to empower women drivers with loans

Odisha Govt to Launch ‘Atmanirbhar Mahila Su Vahak’ Scheme for Women Drivers
The Odisha government is set to launch a new initiative aimed at promoting gender equality and economic empowerment among women through driving and entrepreneurship. The scheme, titled ‘Atmanirbhar Mahila Su Vahak’, will support women in becoming professional drivers and vehicle owners across the state.
Announcing the initiative on Tuesday, Transport and Commerce Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena said the government plans to empower 1,100 women over the next four years under the scheme.
As part of the programme, eligible women will receive interest-free loans of up to ₹10 lakh to purchase vehicles and start their own transport-related ventures.
“The initiative is designed to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for women, encourage their participation in the transport sector, and enhance their financial independence,” Jena said.
Officials added that the scheme will also provide training, licensing support, and business facilitation assistance to help women drivers establish themselves in passenger and goods transport services.
The move aligns with the state government’s broader efforts to foster women’s empowerment, skill development, and entrepreneurship, while also addressing gender imbalance in traditionally male-dominated professions.
