Odisha to Be Developed as India’s Silk Hub: Union Minister Giriraj Singh

Union Minister for Textiles Giriraj Singh on Tuesday announced that Odisha will be developed as the silk hub of India with support from the central and state governments. Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters in Bhubaneswar, Singh emphasized Odisha’s significant contribution to the country’s silk production and handicraft sector.
Currently, India produces 132 metric tonnes of silk, of which 131 metric tonnes is Tussar silk. Odisha plays a crucial role in this industry, with 29 out of 30 districts engaged in silk production and handicrafts. The state is home to approximately 3.5 lakh artisans and handloom weavers, making it a major center for traditional textile craftsmanship.
Singh highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening the silk industry by providing necessary infrastructure, financial support, and skill development programs for weavers and artisans. The initiative aims to boost employment opportunities and enhance Odisha’s position as a leading silk-producing state in the country.
The move aligns with the Centre’s larger vision of promoting India’s textile industry and empowering rural artisans. Further details on implementation strategies and investments are expected to be announced in the coming months.
