Nepal Government Warns of Restricting NOC for Students Seeking Education in Odisha Amid KIIT Incident

The Nepal government has expressed concerns over the recent turmoil at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar following the alleged suicide of a Nepali student. Authorities stated on Tuesday that they may halt the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOC) for students planning to study in Odisha unless the matter is addressed in a “justifiable and legal way.”
The incident revolves around the tragic death of Prakriti Lamsal, a 20-year-old third-year B.Tech (Computer Science) student at KIIT. Lamsal was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday afternoon, triggering widespread unrest among students on the campus.
Following the incident, reports emerged that KIIT authorities forcibly evicted several Nepali students from their hostels, leaving them stranded at Cuttack railway station without any arrangements for further travel. This move has drawn sharp criticism, prompting the Nepalese government to intervene.
A Nepal government spokesperson emphasized that they are closely monitoring the situation and will take necessary steps to protect the rights and well-being of Nepali students studying in Odisha. If the matter is not resolved appropriately, the government may stop granting NOCs, which are mandatory for Nepali students to study abroad.
With Odisha being a preferred educational destination for many Nepali students, such a decision could impact student admissions and institutional reputations. Meanwhile, student groups and human rights activists have urged both the Indian and Nepali governments to ensure justice for the deceased student and safeguard the interests of those affected.
Authorities in Odisha and KIIT management are yet to issue a detailed statement addressing the concerns raised by Nepal’s government.
