Odisha Targets 130 Million Tons Steel by 2030

Odisha Aims to Produce 130 Million Tons of Steel Annually by 2030, Says CM

Bhubaneswar, April 25, 2025 – Odisha is setting its sights on becoming a steel production powerhouse, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announcing the state’s ambitious target to produce 130 million tons per annum (mtpa) of steel by 2030. This bold goal was shared by the CM during his address at the Odisha State Roundtable at India Steel 2025 in Mumbai on Friday.

As of now, Odisha is the largest producer of iron ore and stainless steel in India, housing 54 integrated steel plants with a total production capacity of 41.21 mtpa. The Chief Minister highlighted that the state’s rapid progress in the steel sector is underpinned by a vast supply of raw materials, including iron ore, which is a critical input for steel manufacturing.

To achieve the target of 130 mtpa, Majhi emphasized that the state would require around 190 million tons of iron ore annually. While acknowledging the scale of this undertaking, he expressed confidence that Odisha has the necessary infrastructure, resources, and commitment to reach the goal by 2030.

“Our state has always been a leader in steel production, and with the required investments in technology, capacity expansion, and resource management, we are confident that we will meet our target,” said Majhi, reaffirming Odisha’s strategic position in India’s steel industry.

The CM’s statements underline Odisha’s pivotal role in shaping India’s industrial future, especially in steel production, which is a key driver of economic growth. With plans already in motion for large-scale capacity expansions, Odisha is positioning itself as an essential player in the global steel market.

The state’s commitment to boosting its steel production aligns with India’s broader vision to increase its steel output and contribute to the national economic growth in the coming decade.
