Odisha Plans Grand New Temple at Mahima Peeth, Jorand
Bhubaneswar, Jan 20: The Odisha government has announced plans to construct a grand new temple at the Mahima Peeth in Joranda, located in Dhenkanal district, while preserving the historic Shunya temple at its core.
The Mahima temple, also known as the Shunya temple, is the principal seat of Mahima Dharma — a spiritual movement rooted in simplicity, equality and service to humanity. As part of the redevelopment plan, the existing Shunya temple will be retained in its original form, and a new majestic temple structure will be built over it.
Chief Secretary Anu Garg, who chaired a review meeting on Tuesday to discuss the comprehensive development of the Mahima temple complex, said the project seeks to strengthen religious infrastructure without compromising the sanctity and spiritual character of the site.
The meeting also reviewed the development of associated facilities such as the Akhanda Jyoti temple, Bhajan Mandap, prayer hall, Pushkarini (sacred pond) and overall beautification works. Provisions for a modern kitchen, pilgrim accommodation and adequate parking facilities were also discussed.
Principal Secretary of the Works Department Sanjay Kumar Singh informed the Chief Secretary that the blueprint has been prepared as per the directives of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. He added that consultations with saints and followers of Mahima Dharma were held before finalizing the plan.
Singh said the project is expected to be completed within three years and will significantly boost religious tourism in Odisha.
Dhenkanal District Collector Ashish Ishwar Patil, OBCC Managing Director Ameer Hota and other senior officials attended the meeting.
