Odisha Permits Women Night Shift Work

Odisha Allows Women to Work Night Shifts with Mandatory Safeguards and Consent

In a significant move toward gender inclusivity in the workforce, the Odisha government has officially permitted women to work night shifts in factories, shops, and commercial establishments—subject to written consent and strict safety provisions.

The decision was notified by the Labour and Employees’ State Insurance Department, which issued comprehensive guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of women working during night hours.

According to the notification, written consent from women employees is mandatory for assigning them night shifts. Employers are also required to ensure that at least three women employees are present during any night shift, thereby avoiding isolated work situations.

To further enhance safety, the guidelines mandate adequate transportation facilities for pick-up and drop, equipped with GPS tracking systems. Employers must also ensure appropriate security arrangements and workplace conditions that uphold dignity and safety for women.

The move is being hailed as a progressive step toward empowering women economically while balancing workplace safety and gender equity. It is also expected to boost employment opportunities for women in sectors such as retail, hospitality, IT, and manufacturing.

Officials said the policy aligns with broader efforts under the state’s women empowerment initiatives and complies with evolving labour regulations to encourage safe and inclusive workplaces.
