Odisha Introduces New Criminal Laws for Timely Justice Delivery

Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan announced the implementation of three new criminal laws aimed at ensuring timely delivery of justice in the state. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) have replaced the British-era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
Addressing the media, Minister Harichandan highlighted the significance of these legislative reforms, emphasizing that they respond to longstanding demands for modernization and efficiency in the legal framework. “The British-era laws posed various challenges to our legal system, often leading to delays in justice delivery,” he explained. “With the introduction of these new laws, we aim to overcome these challenges by establishing clear time limits for judicial processes.”
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita focuses on updating and streamlining criminal offenses and penalties, ensuring they are relevant to contemporary societal norms and challenges. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita aims to enhance public safety measures, addressing concerns related to security and protection of citizens. Lastly, the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam introduces reforms in evidence laws, facilitating more efficient and effective legal proceedings.
Minister Harichandan expressed confidence that these reforms would bring about a transformative impact on the state’s legal landscape, promoting transparency, fairness, and expeditious resolution of criminal cases. He assured that the government is committed to ensuring the effective implementation of these laws, thereby improving access to justice for all citizens.
The introduction of these new criminal laws in Odisha reflects a proactive approach by the state government to modernize its legal system and meet the evolving needs of society. As the laws come into effect, stakeholders including legal experts, judiciary, and citizens are keenly observing their implementation and potential impact on the justice delivery system.
