Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Forest Department has taken a significant stride in wildlife conservation with the introduction of comprehensive facilities for elephants at the Kumki Elephant Training Centre in Kumarkhunti, situated within the Chandaka wildlife division near Bhubaneswar.

Inaugurated on March 6, the centre boasts a range of amenities designed to enhance the well-being and care of its resident elephants. These facilities include a specialized kitchen, a dedicated restaurant, a night shelter, a bathing area, and a spacious playing field, all meticulously developed to cater to the unique needs of these majestic creatures.

The Kumki Elephant Training Centre is currently home to six elephants: Mama, Chandu, Uma, Kartik, Master Jaga, and Shankar. Each elephant receives personalized attention and care from a dedicated team of 13 mahouts and assistant mahouts, hailing from Odisha and Assam. These experienced caretakers ensure the elephants’ daily needs are met, from nutrition and hygiene to exercise and enrichment activities.

The establishment of such facilities marks a significant advancement in the region’s approach to elephant care. The specially designed kitchen and restaurant allow for the preparation of nutritious and balanced meals, tailored to each elephant’s dietary requirements.
