Odisha FC’s Playoff Hopes Take a Hit After 1-1 Draw Against Punjab FC
Bhubaneswar: Odisha FC’s aspirations for an Indian Super League (ISL) playoff spot suffered a setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Punjab FC at the Kalinga Stadium on Sunday. Despite a spirited fightback in the second half and an equalizer from Isak Vanlalruatfela, the 10-man Kalinga Warriors now find their fate dependent on other results to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The home side started with urgency, dominating possession and pressing high up the pitch. Saviour Gama and Rahul KP showcased early attacking intent, but Punjab FC’s defense remained resolute. Punjab’s goalkeeper Ravi Kumar made crucial saves to keep Odisha at bay in the opening exchanges.
The turning point of the match came just before halftime when Odisha FC suffered a double blow. Rahul KP was shown a red card for a reckless challenge, reducing the hosts to 10 men. Capitalizing on their numerical advantage, Punjab FC struck minutes later, as Petros Giakoumakis curled a stunning shot into the top corner, giving the visitors a crucial lead heading into the break.
Odisha FC, despite being a man down, showed tremendous resilience in the second half. Their relentless pressure paid off in the 51st minute when Isak Vanlalruatfela found the back of the net with a composed left-footed strike, courtesy of an assist from Diego Maurício. The equalizer reignited Odisha’s attacking spirit, and they continued to push for a winner.
In the dying moments of the match, Odisha nearly snatched all three points. Isak worked tirelessly in defense and attack, creating one final opportunity in injury time. However, Hugo Boumous’ shot was brilliantly saved by Punjab’s Ravi Kumar, ensuring the match ended in a stalemate.
With this result, Odisha FC remains in seventh place with 26 points, making their playoff qualification an uphill battle. They now turn their focus to their next fixture against Hyderabad FC at home on February 14, where a victory will be crucial to keeping their postseason ambitions alive.
