Odisha CM Waives Hostel Food Fees, Increases Mid-Day Meal Cost by ₹1

In a significant move aimed at easing the financial burden on parents, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday announced the waiver of food fees for students residing in 455 school hostels across the state. The announcement was made during the inaugural ceremony of the state-level children’s festival, Suravi, which commenced on November 12.
The waiver, which applies to 314 boys’ hostels and 141 girls’ hostels, will be fully funded by the state government. Previously, parents were required to contribute ₹2,000 per month towards their children’s food expenses. This initiative is expected to provide substantial relief to families, particularly those from economically weaker sections.
Addressing the gathering, CM Majhi said, “Education is a fundamental right, and we are committed to ensuring that no child is deprived of quality education due to financial constraints. This decision is a step towards creating a more inclusive educational environment.”
In addition to waiving the hostel food fees, the Chief Minister also announced a ₹1 hike in the cost of the mid-day meal per student, aimed at improving the quality and nutritional value of meals provided in government and government-aided schools.
The announcements have been widely appreciated by parents and education activists. “This is a welcome move, especially for families struggling with rising costs. It will encourage more parents to send their children to hostels without worrying about the financial strain,” said a parent from a remote district.
The Suravi festival, a platform to showcase the creative talents of children, will continue till November 16, featuring various cultural and educational activities.
