Odisha CM Extends Bali Jatra by One Day; Opposition Demands National Festival Status

In response to overwhelming public enthusiasm, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Tuesday the extension of the historic Bali Jatra in Cuttack by one more day. Originally scheduled to conclude on November 22, the festival will now end on November 23. The Chief Minister made this announcement via a post on X during his business trip to Singapore, emphasizing the massive public excitement surrounding the event.

Meanwhile, the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has renewed its demand for Bali Jatra to be declared a national festival, citing its cultural and historical significance.

Bali Jatra, held annually on the banks of the Mahanadi River, commemorates the ancient maritime heritage of Odisha. It marks the time when Odia mariners, or Sadhabas, set sail to far-off destinations such as Bali, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and Sri Lanka to foster trade and cultural exchanges.

The event, which draws lakhs of visitors, is a vibrant celebration featuring traditional crafts, cultural performances, food stalls, and exhibitions showcasing Odisha’s rich heritage.

The opposition’s demand for national recognition comes as Bali Jatra continues to grow in scale and popularity, underscoring its importance as a symbol of Odisha’s maritime legacy and cultural pride.
