Odisha CM Announces Compensation After Student’s Death

Odisha CM Announces ₹20 Lakh Ex Gratia for Family of Deceased Balasore Student
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday announced an ex gratia of ₹20 lakh for the family of the college student from Balasore who tragically died after setting herself ablaze over alleged inaction on her sexual harassment complaint.
The announcement comes amid growing outrage and demands for accountability following the student’s death at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, days after she attempted self-immolation in protest.
In a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured that justice would be served. He directed officials to carry out a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure that those responsible are held accountable under the law.
“This is a deeply tragic incident, and the government stands with the family in this moment of grief. We will not spare anyone found guilty,” the CM said.
Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati also expressed condolences, stating that the incident highlights the urgent need for strict institutional safeguards to protect students from such trauma.
The case has sparked widespread condemnation across the state and country, with political leaders and civil society groups demanding stronger mechanisms to address sexual harassment complaints and prevent institutional apathy.
