Odisha clears free bus rides for students

Odisha CM Approves Free Bus Rides for Schoolchildren

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has approved a proposal to provide free bus rides to schoolchildren across the state under the Mukhyamantri Bus Seva (MBS) scheme, an official release said on Wednesday.

The decision, aimed at easing travel for students and ensuring safe and affordable access to education, was taken in line with the recommendations of a high-level meeting chaired by the CM on August 21.

Under the scheme, all schoolchildren will be eligible to avail free bus rides by showing a valid student ID card or by wearing their school uniforms.

Officials said the move will not only reduce the financial burden on families but also promote greater attendance in schools, especially in semi-urban and rural areas where transport remains a challenge.

The government is expected to roll out the initiative in a phased manner, ensuring that buses under the MBS scheme are adequately equipped to serve school-going children across districts.

The CM described the scheme as a step towards fulfilling the government’s commitment to student welfare and inclusive education.
