Odisha celebrates Makar Sankranti with holy dips and festivities
People across Odisha observed Makar Sankranti on Wednesday by taking holy dips in rivers and other water bodies, participating in traditional rituals, kite flying, and community feasts.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Maji took a sacred dip in the Baitarani River in his home district of Keonjhar and offered prayers at a Shiva temple. The Chief Minister conveyed his greetings on social media, stating, “May this great tradition of Odisha further strengthen our social unity and harmony. May the blessings of Mahaprabhu keep the stream of the state’s progress uninterrupted, and may every family be filled with joy and happiness.”
The festival, celebrated with religious fervour and cultural activities, marks the transition of the sun into Capricorn (Makara) and is a time for gratitude, community bonding, and spreading joy across the state.
