Odisha Tightens Security at Sri Jagannath Temple Following Pahalgam Terror Attack
Puri: In the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, the Odisha government has significantly intensified security measures at the Sri Jagannath Temple, one of Hinduism’s most sacred pilgrimage sites.
According to Puri Superintendent of Police Vinit Agarwal, a comprehensive security plan has been rolled out to safeguard the temple premises, its devotees, and surrounding areas. A specialized team, including one commandant, two deputy commandants, and three assistant commandants, has been deputed to oversee the security operations. The officers, appointed for a three-year deputation, have been directed to report on April 28, as per an order issued by the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP).
To further bolster security, eight inspectors, 31 sub-inspectors, and 24 assistant sub-inspectors will be stationed at strategic points. Their responsibilities will include maintaining law and order, enhancing the queue management system for smooth darshan (viewing) by devotees, and ensuring comprehensive surveillance of critical areas like the Parikrama corridor, Gundicha Temple, and Mausima Temple.
SP Agarwal added that experienced police officers from armed battalions, particularly those trained in anti-terrorist operations, will be assigned to the temple security team to strengthen the preventive measures.
Initially, plans were in place to deploy 1,083 personnel for the temple’s security. However, in view of the heightened threat perception, the number may now rise to around 1,200 officers. Agarwal also confirmed that the recruitment process for this dedicated temple protection battalion has already begun.
The move underscores the state government’s proactive approach to safeguarding the centuries-old shrine and ensuring a safe and peaceful pilgrimage experience for millions of devotees.
