Odisha Blocks Fake Hotel Booking Websites

Odisha Cyber Crime Unit Cracks Down on Fake Hotel Websites Ahead of Rath Yatra
Bhubaneswar, July 1 — In a proactive move to protect devotees and tourists during the ongoing Rath Yatra, the Cyber Crime Unit under the CID, Crime Branch of Odisha Police has identified 23 fake hotel booking websites. Of these, 15 have already been blocked, with action underway to take down the remaining eight.
The Social Media Team of the Cyber Crime Unit began its surveillance drive in June this year, ahead of the annual Rath Yatra festival in Puri, which draws lakhs of devotees from across India. Officials said that the initiative is aimed at preventing a repeat of last year, when many unsuspecting tourists were defrauded through fake hotel booking scams.
The crackdown will continue till the conclusion of the “Sunabesha” ritual of the Holy Trinity at Shree Jagannath Temple, according to Crime Branch sources.
Cybercriminals have been creating fake hotel websites that mimic the design, branding, and even URLs of genuine hotels in Puri. These fraudulent sites often offer tempting discounts and appear at the top of search engine results, making them look legitimate. Once the user is tricked, scammers demand full advance payment via UPI, digital wallets, or bank transfers and issue fake booking confirmations.
To prevent further victimization, the Cyber Crime Unit is using its official cyber safety pages on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram (@cybercopodisha) to share frequent updates, awareness messages, and real-time alerts.
Authorities have urged the public to:
- Book only through verified platforms such as MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, or official tourism websites.
- Cross-check hotel contact details and locations using Google Maps.
- Confirm bookings directly with the hotel via phone.
- Avoid making full advance payments and use secure payment methods only.
- Refrain from transferring money via UPI or digital wallets to unverified sources.
Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious hotel websites or scams by calling the Cyber Helpline at 1930.
The Odisha Crime Branch reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the digital safety of citizens and pilgrims during this sacred and high-traffic time.
