Odisha Bans Meat, Liquor Near Temple

Odisha Government to Ban Sale of Meat and Liquor Near Jagannath Temple in Puri

In a move aimed at preserving the spiritual sanctity of the holy town of Puri, the Odisha government has decided to impose a complete ban on the sale of non-vegetarian food and liquor within a 2-kilometre radius of the Jagannath temple. This was announced by Law and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Sunday.

Addressing media persons, Harichandan said the government is committed to protecting the religious and cultural environment surrounding the 12th-century shrine, which is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in the country.

“A complete ban on the sale of meat and liquor, including in licensed bars and eateries, within a 2-km radius of the Jagannath temple will be strictly enforced,” he stated.

The minister added that the decision is part of a broader initiative by the newly formed state government to uphold the temple town’s sanctity and spiritual heritage.

Officials said that detailed guidelines regarding the implementation of the ban will be issued soon. The move has garnered support from several religious groups and devotees, although reactions from local businesses and traders are awaited.

The Jagannath temple, a major religious and cultural landmark, attracts millions of devotees and tourists each year, particularly during the annual Rath Yatra.
