NTCA Approves Translocation of Tigers from MP to Other States
The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has given the green light for the translocation of tigers from Madhya Pradesh to Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Odisha. This decision, announced on Sunday, aims to enhance the genetic diversity of tiger populations in these states.
The move comes as part of a broader strategy to improve the overall health and genetic robustness of tiger populations across India. Wildlife experts believe that this translocation will contribute positively to the gene pool of tigers in the recipient states, potentially boosting their long-term viability.
Madhya Pradesh, which currently boasts the largest tiger population in India with 785 big cats as per the 2022 tiger census, will be the source of these tigers. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts by the NTCA to ensure the sustainability and resilience of tiger populations across the country.
The translocation plan underscores the NTCA’s commitment to wildlife conservation and the maintenance of healthy and diverse tiger populations throughout India.
