NHRC Seeks Report from Odisha DGP Over Alleged Assault on TV Journalist
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a detailed report from the Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha following allegations of a physical assault on a TV journalist in Bolangir district.
Acting on its own initiative, the NHRC took suo motu cognisance of media reports concerning the May 25 incident. The Commission has directed the DGP to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks.
According to reports, the journalist was allegedly attacked by a group of miscreants while he was covering a story at a construction site in a village in Bolangir district. The journalist had reportedly gone there to investigate claims of corruption linked to an ongoing construction project.
Officials said the NHRC views the incident as a potential violation of press freedom and the right to safety for working journalists. The Commission’s directive aims to ensure accountability and protection for media personnel engaged in exposing wrongdoing.
