Odisha CM pays tribute to Pandit Raghunath Murmu on 121st birth anniversary
Bhubaneswar, May 1: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday paid rich tributes to Pandit Raghunath Murmu on his 121st birth anniversary, remembering his monumental contribution to the Santali language and culture.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister hailed Murmu as a legendary figure of the Santali community who played a pivotal role in preserving its cultural identity. He noted that the creation of the Ol Chiki script gave Santali a distinct linguistic identity and empowered generations to safeguard their heritage.
“Pandit Murmu created history through his visionary work. His contribution remains invaluable and continues to inspire society,” Majhi said, urging people to follow Murmu’s ideals and work collectively towards building a progressive and culturally enriched society.

Several dignitaries, including Speaker Surama Padhy, Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi, and officials from the Department of Odia Language, Literature and Culture, joined intellectuals and social workers in paying homage to the revered leader.
The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) also paid tribute, describing Murmu as “Guru Gomke” and highlighting how his creation of the Ol Chiki script strengthened the Santali language and helped preserve its rich culture, heritage, and knowledge.
Murmu’s pioneering efforts in developing a written script for Santali are widely regarded as a turning point in ensuring linguistic recognition and cultural pride for the community. His legacy continues to inspire efforts toward empowerment and cultural preservation across generations.
