Nepal Probes Second KIIT Student Death

Nepal Seeks Diplomatic Probe into Death of Student at KIIT, Odisha
The government of Nepal has initiated diplomatic discussions with Indian authorities following the tragic death of an 18-year-old Nepalese student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar. The student, a first-year B.Tech Computer Science student, was found hanging in her hostel room on Thursday evening, according to local police reports.
Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Friday that it is in touch with the Indian central government to ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. The ministry also stated that it is closely coordinating with the Nepalese Embassy in New Delhi to monitor developments and offer necessary support.
This incident marks the second death of a Nepalese student at KIIT in less than three months. On February 16, Prakriti Lamsal, another student from Nepal, also died by suicide under similar circumstances. The back-to-back tragedies have sparked concern within Nepal’s academic and diplomatic circles, raising questions about student well-being and safety in foreign institutions.
Authorities at KIIT have yet to release an official statement on the latest incident. Meanwhile, police have initiated an inquest and are awaiting post-mortem reports to determine the exact cause of death.
Grief has spread among the Nepalese student community in Odisha, with many calling for enhanced mental health support and counseling services on campus.
Nepalese officials have urged Indian authorities to ensure transparency in the investigation and to take necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
