Neeraj Chopra to Headline Prestigious Javelin Throw Event in India
New Delhi, Jan 12 : Neeraj Chopra, India’s two-time Olympic medallist, is set to headline a prestigious World Athletics Continental Tour javelin throw event scheduled for May. This historic competition, sanctioned by World Athletics and supported by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), will be the first-ever world-class javelin-only meet to be held on Indian soil.
Although the exact date and venue are yet to be confirmed, the event promises to attract top-tier javelin throwers from across the globe, with the top-10 javelin athletes invited to compete. This invitational tournament will be a significant milestone for India in the field of athletics.
Outgoing AFI president Adille Sumariwalla confirmed that the event will feature some of the finest male and female javelin throwers, making it a major attraction for sports enthusiasts.
Neeraj Chopra, who is also part of the organising team alongside JSW, expressed his excitement, saying, “It has been a longstanding dream of mine to organise and bring a world-class javelin competition to India. I am sure my fellow athletes and the fans will create an unforgettable experience.” Chopra is eager to see how big the event can grow, highlighting the importance of showcasing such world-class competitions in India.
The event will be the second Continental Tour meet of the year in India, following the Indian Open World Athletics Bronze Level Continental Tour scheduled for August 10 in Bhubaneswar. The Continental Tour is a series of international one-day meetings, just below the prestigious Diamond League.
World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe also expressed his delight in supporting the event, which will not only showcase India’s top athletes but also highlight the country’s ability to host world-class sporting events.
India is set to become a major hub for athletics, with other high-profile events on the horizon, including the Para Athletics World Championships in New Delhi in September-October, the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in March, and bids for the 2027 World Relays, 2028 World Junior Championships, and the 2029 World Championships.
The nation previously hosted significant athletic events in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including the World Half Marathon Championship in New Delhi in 2004.
