PM Modi Meets German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at G7 Summit, Vows to Deepen Strategic Partnership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with the newly elected Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. This was their first in-person meeting since Merz assumed office in May 2025.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated Chancellor Merz on his electoral victory and welcomed his leadership. He also expressed gratitude for Germany’s heartfelt condolences over the recent tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad.
Both leaders reviewed the growing momentum in India-Germany ties and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation across strategic domains. These include trade and investment, defence and security, green energy, sustainable development, technology, innovation, education, and skilled mobility.
As the two nations mark 25 years of their Strategic Partnership, the leaders agreed to deepen and diversify collaboration, aligning efforts to address global challenges and bilateral priorities.
The issue of terrorism featured prominently in the discussions. Prime Minister Modi thanked Germany for its strong support of India’s counter-terrorism efforts, with both leaders acknowledging terrorism as a grave threat to global peace and stability.
The leaders also exchanged views on key regional and international developments, underscoring the importance of multilateral cooperation in ensuring peace and sustainable growth.
Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to Chancellor Merz to visit India at a mutually convenient time, expressing hope for continued engagement to further strengthen the India-Germany partnership.
