Manoj Kumar Saved Iconic ‘Lag Ja Gale’

Manoj Kumar Saved Iconic Song ‘Lag Ja Gale’ from Rejection, Reveals Biography
One of Bollywood’s most beloved songs, Lag Ja Gale, almost never made it to the screen. According to Raj Khosla: The Authorized Biography, released ahead of the legendary filmmaker’s 100th birth anniversary on May 31, the haunting melody was initially rejected by director Raj Khosla himself.
The book reveals that it was veteran actor Manoj Kumar who stepped in to rescue the now-classic song after composer Madan Mohan reached out in desperation.
“I got a call from Madan Mohan one day. ‘Raj Khosla has lost his mind,’ Madan said. ‘Ek gaana sunaya. Usko pasand nahi aaya. You come and handle this, please,’” Kumar is quoted as saying.
After listening to the song, Kumar was deeply moved and took it upon himself to convince Khosla to include it in the 1964 film Woh Kaun Thi. Once Khosla heard the track again, the book recounts, he was so overwhelmed by his earlier judgment that he jokingly picked up his shoe to hit himself in regret.
Sung by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar and composed by Madan Mohan, Lag Ja Gale has since become an iconic symbol of timeless romance in Hindi cinema. Its survival, it seems, was thanks to Manoj Kumar’s artistic instinct and timely intervention.
The biography offers many such anecdotes, shedding light on Khosla’s career and legacy, and will be available in stores to commemorate the centenary of one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated filmmakers.
