Gukesh Finds Starting with Black Pieces Challenging Ahead of Carlsen Clash
World chess champion D. Gukesh admitted that beginning a tournament with the black pieces presents a challenging start, especially when facing reigning World No.1 Magnus Carlsen. The two grandmasters are set to meet in the opening round of the Norway Chess tournament, which began here on Monday.
This match will be their first classical encounter since Gukesh claimed the world title late last year. Both players recognize the importance of a strong opening game to build momentum in the competition.
“For sure, it’s a special game to start the tournament with,” Gukesh said. “But also, I mean, you play all the players with both colours, so it really doesn’t make a difference.”
Despite downplaying the significance of the color disadvantage, Gukesh acknowledged the difficulty of getting into the best shape when starting with the black pieces, particularly against a formidable opponent like Carlsen on his home turf.
The Norway Chess tournament brings together the world’s elite players in one of the most competitive chess events of the year, with fans eagerly awaiting the showdown between the reigning world champion and the former titleholder.
