Lucknow’s cuisine earns UNESCO gastronomy recognition

‘Better late than ever,’ say Lucknow food experts on UNESCO honour

Chefs and food connoisseurs in Lucknow have hailed the city’s inclusion in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network for Gastronomy, calling it a long-overdue recognition of the region’s rich culinary heritage.

Describing the honour as “better late than ever,” culinary experts said the acknowledgment validates centuries of Lucknow’s gastronomic excellence that reflects a blend of diverse Indian traditions and flavours.

“Better late than never. This recognition to Lucknow was expected,” said Pushpesh Pant, president of the Cuisine Society of India. “It’s a long-delayed honour for a city regarded as the Mecca of gourmet culture in India.”

The UNESCO recognition celebrates Lucknow’s famed Lakhnawi cuisine — known for its delicate balance of spices, intricate cooking techniques, and timeless dishes like kebabs, biryanis, and kormas — marking a proud moment for the city’s culinary community.
