Kiku Sharda: “Not Right to Joke About Religion or God”
Actor-comedian Kiku Sharda has emphasized the importance of respecting religious sentiments, stating that there are moral boundaries that should not be crossed in comedy, particularly when it involves religion or God.
Sharda, known for his roles in popular comedy shows, made these remarks during an interview on “The Great Indian Kapil Show” on Netflix, hosted by fellow comedian Sunil Grover. While discussing the role of humor in sensitive topics, Sharda firmly expressed his belief that jokes on religion or God are inappropriate.
This statement comes years after Sharda’s controversial arrest in 2016 by the Haryana Police for mimicking Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, which was seen as offensive by the followers of the self-proclaimed Godman. Sharda’s portrayal led to widespread outrage and legal trouble, resulting in his arrest for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
When Grover attempted to revisit the 2016 incident during the interview, Sharda politely declined to comment, preferring to focus on the broader principles of comedy. “There are lines that shouldn’t be crossed. It’s not right to make jokes about religion or God,” he said, highlighting his cautious approach to comedy in the wake of past controversies.
Sharda’s remarks reflect the ongoing debate within the entertainment industry about the ethical limits of humor, particularly in a diverse and sensitive society. His stance serves as a reminder of the impact of comedy on religious sentiments and the importance of balancing humor with respect.
