Kangana’s ‘Emergency’ not based on book

Kangana’s ‘Emergency’ Only Inspired, Not Based on Coomi Kapoor’s Book: Production House
Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut’s production house, Manikarnika Films, on Monday clarified that its upcoming film “Emergency” is not based on senior journalist Coomi Kapoor’s book “The Emergency: A Personal History”, but only inspired by it.
In a statement, the production company said the film “draws inspiration from multiple historical sources” and is a “fictionalised depiction of events surrounding the 1975 Emergency period,” denying any direct adaptation of Kapoor’s work.
The clarification follows Kapoor’s petition in the Delhi High Court earlier this year, where she alleged that the makers of “Emergency” had violated the agreement concerning adaptation rights for her book, published by Penguin in 2015.
Kapoor also claimed that the film contained “multiple factual inaccuracies and misleading portrayals of historical events,” which could distort the public’s understanding of that period.
Starring Kangana Ranaut as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, “Emergency” marks Ranaut’s directorial venture and has been one of her most anticipated projects. The matter remains sub judice before the Delhi High Court.
