JLN Stadium to Become Sports City

JLN Stadium to be Redeveloped into World-Class Sports City

The iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JLN) in the heart of the national capital is set for a massive transformation, with the government planning to redevelop it into a state-of-the-art Sports City catering to multiple disciplines and equipped with residential facilities for athletes.

According to sources in the Sports Ministry, the ambitious project will involve completely dismantling the existing stadium structure spread across 102 acres. The proposed Sports City is envisioned to become a one-stop hub for training, competitions, and athlete accommodation—bringing India’s sporting infrastructure closer to international standards.

While the proposal is currently in its conceptual stage, officials said that the final blueprint and execution timeline are yet to be worked out. The ministry is reportedly studying models of successful sports cities in Qatar and Australia to draw insights for the project’s design and functionality.

“All offices inside the existing stadium, including the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), will be relocated as part of the redevelopment,” a senior ministry official confirmed.

The JLN Stadium, originally built for the 1982 Asian Games and renovated ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, has been a landmark venue for major sporting and cultural events in India. If approved, the redevelopment would mark one of the most significant overhauls in the country’s sports infrastructure, positioning Delhi as a global hub for multi-sport activities.
