ISRO Chief S Somanath Encourages Youth to Embrace Science and Technology at IISF 2024
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S Somanath urged students to engage with the country’s rapidly advancing scientific and technological landscape, emphasizing their pivotal role in making India a global leader. Speaking at the Student Science Interactive Program – Face to Face with New Frontiers in S&T, part of the four-day India International Science Festival (IISF) 2024 at IIT-Guwahati, Somanath inspired young minds to pursue careers in science and technology and contribute to innovation in these fields.
The event, concluding on Tuesday, brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and students to discuss sustainable practices across sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and healthcare. Somanath highlighted the importance of youth participation in India’s scientific endeavors, saying, “As students, you are the torchbearers of the future in science and technology. By recognizing today’s advancements and opportunities, you can build a brighter tomorrow.”
Focus on Innovation and Industry Collaboration
The IISF 2024 placed a strong emphasis on fostering innovation and industry-academia collaboration. It featured knowledge-sharing technical sessions aimed at inspiring students and educators to adopt creative, knowledge-based learning approaches.
A key highlight of the festival was the Lab-to-Life Initiative, where the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) signed three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to promote sustainable practices and technological advancements.
C Anandharamakrishnan, Director of CSIR-NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram, noted the emergence of young innovators in India. “Students in colleges are building rockets and satellites, efforts that are nearing commercial success. These advancements are not just inspiring but also pivotal for shaping a brighter future,” he said.
Inspiring Future Scientists
Somanath’s interaction with students aimed to ignite their curiosity about careers in space research and technology. The ISRO chairman stressed that engagement in these fields is crucial for India to achieve its vision of becoming a global leader in science and technology.
The IISF continues to inspire India’s youth and strengthen ties between academia, industry, and policymakers. As the festival draws to a close, it leaves behind a legacy of innovation and a roadmap for sustainable and technological growth.
