INS Tarkash Seizes 2500 Kg Narcotics

Indian Navy’s INS Tarkash Seizes 2500 Kg of Narcotics in Western Indian Ocean
In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Indian Navy’s frontline frigate, INS Tarkash, deployed under the Western Naval Command, successfully intercepted and seized over 2,500 kg of narcotics in the Western Indian Ocean. This operation reinforces India’s commitment to combating maritime crime and enhancing regional security.
Successful Interception & Seizure
Operating as part of Combined Task Force (CTF) 150 under the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), INS Tarkash has been stationed in the region since January 2025 for Maritime Security Operations. The warship is also participating in the multi-national joint operation ‘Anzac Tiger’.
On March 31, 2025, while on patrol, INS Tarkash received intelligence inputs from Indian Navy P8I aircraft regarding suspicious vessels operating in the area, suspected of engaging in illicit activities, including drug trafficking.
Acting swiftly, INS Tarkash altered its course to intercept and investigate the vessels. After systematically interrogating all suspicious boats in the vicinity, the warship boarded a suspect Dhow following coordinated efforts with the P8I aircraft and the Maritime Operations Centre in Mumbai. To further monitor the activities, the ship also deployed its integral helicopter.
Major Drug Haul
A specialist boarding team, along with Marine Commandos (MARCOS), conducted an extensive search of the Dhow. The operation led to the discovery of 2,500 kg of narcotics, including:
- 2,386 kg of hashish
- 121 kg of heroin
The narcotics were concealed in multiple sealed packets across different cargo compartments of the vessel.
Crew Interrogation & Regional Security Efforts
Following the seizure, the suspect vessel was brought under control, and its crew members were subjected to questioning regarding their modus operandi and possible connections to other trafficking networks.
The successful seizure highlights the Indian Navy’s professionalism and operational readiness in deterring and disrupting illicit activities at sea. The Navy’s participation in multi-national security operations strengthens regional stability, security, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
India’s Commitment to Maritime Security
The Indian Navy continues to play a pivotal role in global maritime security operations by working in collaboration with international naval forces to prevent illegal trafficking and other transnational crimes at sea. The latest interception by INS Tarkash underscores India’s unwavering resolve in securing international waters and protecting maritime trade routes from illicit activities.
