Historic Paralakhemundi Railway Station to Undergo Major Redevelopment
Bhubaneswar : The historic Paralakhemundi Railway Station in Odisha is set for a major transformation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, an initiative launched by the Ministry of Railways to upgrade railway stations across the country.
The Paralakhemundi Railway Station holds a special place in the history of Indian Railways. Established in 1899 under the patronage of the Gajapati Maharaja of Paralakhemundi, it was Odisha’s first dedicated railway line. Known as the Paralakhemundi Light Railway (PLR), it was also the first narrow-gauge railway line in the state and remains one of Odisha’s oldest railway stations. Over the years, the station has played a crucial role in connecting Paralakhemundi with Naupada and Gunupur, significantly contributing to the region’s socio-economic development.
The foundation stone for the Gauge Conversion of the Naupada–Gunupur railway line was laid on September 27, 2002, at Naupada. The railway line officially became part of the newly formed East Coast Railway on April 1, 2003. The line was closed for gauge conversion on June 9, 2004, and services resumed on August 22, 2011, with the introduction of the Puri–Gunupur Passenger train.
Now, with a redevelopment budget of Rs 16.4 crore, the Paralakhemundi Railway Station will be upgraded into a modern, customer-friendly transportation hub while preserving its historical charm. According to East Coast Railway (ECoR) sources, the station will undergo a complete overhaul, introducing state-of-the-art passenger amenities.
The upgraded station will feature a Reserved Lounge, a First-Class Waiting Hall, a General Waiting Hall, and Premium Toilets, including Divyangjan-friendly facilities. A 12-meter-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) and two new passenger lifts will improve accessibility for differently-abled individuals. Enhanced lighting and security measures will be implemented to ensure passenger safety, particularly during nighttime.
The station’s circulation areas will be expanded and modernized, featuring a new entrance arch, parking facilities, and an improved approach road. Additionally, a park and a future commercial zone will be developed as part of the modernization project.
Inspired by the Royal Palace of Paralakhemundi, the new design will incorporate modern construction materials while retaining the region’s royal heritage. Sustainable practices, including energy-efficient lighting, landscaping, and multi-modal transport integration, will also be integrated into the project.
The redevelopment of the Paralakhemundi Railway Station is expected to enhance passenger experience while preserving its rich historical and cultural significance, making it a landmark in Odisha’s railway infrastructure.
