ECoR Sets Record in Freight Transport

ECoR Achieves Record-Breaking Freight Transport Milestone in 2024-25

Bhubaneswar: The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has set a new national benchmark in freight transportation by achieving a record 259.254 million tons of originating freight during the financial year 2024-25. This remarkable feat makes ECoR the first railway zone in the country to surpass the 259 million-ton mark, setting a new record in freight loading.

The latest achievement represents a 1.2 percent growth over the previous fiscal year, with an increase of 3.034 million tons compared to 2023-24. Apart from ECoR, other high-performing railway zones that crossed the 200 million tons mark include South East Central Railway (SEC) with 253.208 million tons, South Eastern Railway (SE) with 212.361 million tons, and East Central Railway (EC) with 202.62 million tons of freight loading.

ECoR has consistently demonstrated its dominance in freight operations, marking the sixth consecutive year of surpassing 200 million tons in loading. Throughout the financial year, the zone transported various essential commodities, including:

  • 153.271 million tons of coal
  • 9.952 million tons of raw materials for steel plants
  • 21.381 million tons of steel and slag
  • 32.476 million tons of iron ore
  • 1.065 million tons of cement
  • 2.989 million tons of food grains
  • 6.772 million tons of fertilizers
  • 2.991 million tons of mineral oil
  • 28.357 million tons of container freight

This record-breaking performance was bolstered by major coal supplies from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) in Talcher, as well as freight movement through five key ports under ECoR’s jurisdiction—Paradeep, Dhamara, Vizag, Gangavaram, and Gopalpur. Industries in the steel, aluminum, and iron ore sectors also contributed significantly to the region’s freight operations.

The dedicated efforts of all three divisions of ECoR—Khurda Road, Waltair, and Sambalpur—played a crucial role in surpassing last year’s figures and achieving this milestone.

Congratulating the workforce for their outstanding efforts, ECoR General Manager Parmeshwar Funkwal stated that this performance is a testament to the efficient coordination between East Coast Railway and various government agencies, industries, and stakeholders. He further emphasized ECoR’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in freight operations.

With this remarkable success, ECoR has once again set a benchmark for Indian Railways, reinforcing its critical role in driving economic growth through efficient freight transportation.
