Indore chaat vendors switch to electric cooking

Vendors at the popular Chaat Chowpatty in Indore have begun shifting from traditional gas burners to electric cooking appliances following disruptions in commercial LPG supplies linked to tensions in West Asia.

The move comes after oil marketing companies prioritised the supply of domestic cooking gas, leading to a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders used by restaurants and street food vendors.

Shopkeepers at the bustling food hub said the transition to electric stoves, induction cooktops and other appliances has helped them continue serving customers and keep the city’s vibrant street food culture running despite the supply constraints.

Several vendors noted that while electric cooking may slightly change the cooking process, it allows them to maintain operations without depending entirely on LPG cylinders.

Some shop owners also said they are exploring alternative solutions such as solar-powered cooking appliances if the shortage continues for a longer period.

The shift reflects how small businesses are adapting to supply disruptions by adopting alternative energy sources while ensuring that popular local food spots remain active and accessible to customers.
