India Edge Past Belgium in Thrilling Quarterfinal to Set Up Semifinal Clash Against Germany

The Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team showcased nerves of steel as they defeated Belgium 2-2 (4-3 in shootout) in a pulsating quarterfinal at the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025, held in Chennai.

India’s hero of the night was Princedeep Singh, whose remarkable goalkeeping, particularly during the tense shootout, evoked memories of his coach, former Indian senior team custodian PR Sreejesh. Awarded Player of the Match, Princedeep was instrumental throughout the regulation time, especially in the third quarter when Belgium earned consecutive penalty corners.

Sharda Nand Tiwari emerged as India’s sharpshooter in the shootout, netting three crucial goals, while Ankit Pal converted the decisive strike to seal India’s victory.

The match began with Belgium taking an early lead in the 13th minute through Gaspard Cornez-Massant, forcing India onto the backfoot. Captain Rohit equalized in the 45th minute with a sublime dragflick, bringing the score to 1-1. India then surged ahead in the 48th minute when Sharda Nand Tiwari converted a penalty corner to make it 2-1. However, Belgium fought back, and Nathan Rogge scored the equalizer in the 59th minute, pushing the match into a nerve-wracking shootout.

Speaking after the match, Princedeep said, “I have learnt a lot from Sreejesh, and the confidence I get from watching him has helped me immensely. The crowd support in Chennai has been incredible. It was a sensational match.”

With this win, India now gears up to face seven-time champions Germany in the semifinals on 7 December 2025, promising another thrilling encounter.
