India Open: PV Sindhu Falls to Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in Quarterfinals

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu’s campaign at the India Open Super 750 came to a heartbreaking end in the women’s singles quarterfinals on Friday. The former champion was defeated by Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, the Paris Olympics bronze medallist, in a thrilling three-game encounter.
Sindhu, who had a slow start, was dominated in the opening game, losing 9-21. However, the Indian star displayed resilience and bounced back strongly in the second game, winning 21-19 to level the match. Despite her valiant efforts, Sindhu ultimately faltered in the decider, losing 17-21 in a gripping 62-minute battle.
“It is sad definitely that I lost in the third set after fighting so hard, but I think the game is such. I have to come back stronger. At that point, anybody would have won or lost that point,” Sindhu shared with reporters after the match.
The loss marks a disappointing exit for Sindhu, who had hoped to make a deeper run in the tournament. Despite the defeat, her performance against a tough opponent showcased her fighting spirit and determination, promising better results in the future.
