IMD Forecasts Five-Days Rainfall In Odisha

IMD Predicts Widespread Rainfall in Odisha for Next Five Days

Bhubaneswar, May 26 : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a forecast of widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across Odisha over the next five days, owing to a likely low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD’s midday weather bulletin, an upper air trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over Marathwada and its surrounding regions is currently influencing weather patterns. The trough stretches across north Telangana, south Chhattisgarh, and south Odisha, and is expected to tilt southwards above the mean sea level.

The IMD has projected the formation of a low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27. This development is likely to bring significant weather changes to Odisha, including moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in multiple districts.

The forecast includes thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and surface wind speeds of 40–50 km/h. Several districts have been placed under yellow warning, urging caution. The IMD has also warned of squally weather with gusts exceeding 45 km/h from May 29 to June 1 along and off the Odisha coast, potentially affecting marine activities.

Sea conditions are predicted to be moderate to rough during this period. In light of this, fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the deep sea from May 29 to June 1 along and off the Odisha coast.

The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has instructed all district administrations under yellow warning to stay alert and prepare for any possible emergencies. The SRC has also urged the public to follow weather advisories, avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, and take shelter to minimize lightning-related risks.

District collectors have been directed to submit prompt reports on any damages caused by thunderstorms, hailstorms, lightning, or heavy rainfall.

With this alert, Odisha braces for several days of intense weather, and authorities are on high alert to ensure public safety and minimize disruptions.
