Hockey India Grants Rs 2 Lakh to Unemployed Players
Lucknow, 01 September 2024: In a move aimed at supporting players who are yet to secure employment in Government departments or Public Sector Units (PSU), Hockey India has announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh for members of the Indian Men’s and Women’s Core Probable Groups. This decision was made during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Lucknow today.
Dr. Dilip Tirkey, President of Hockey India, explained the rationale behind the grant: “While many hockey players are recognized for their performances and offered jobs by PSUs and Government Departments, some newcomers, particularly women, are still unemployed. To alleviate financial strain on these players and their families, the Hockey India Executive Board has decided to provide a Rs 2 lakh grant annually.”
The AGM in Lucknow also featured a high tea hosted by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The event was attended by representatives from 31 State Member Units of Hockey India, as well as Hockey India Executive Board members including Dr. Tirkey, Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh, and Treasurer Sekar J Manoharan. Sports Minister Shri Girish Chandra Yadav was also present. The discussions at this gathering were centered on advancing hockey in Uttar Pradesh, a state with a rich hockey legacy.
The AGM marked the first time it was held in Lucknow, and several key decisions were made, including those related to the Hockey India League. The meeting also covered progress reports on the Indian National Teams, upcoming events, and development programs at the grassroots level. Additionally, discussions focused on enhancing Coaches Education Pathway and utilizing former hockey stars in various roles to boost the sport.
Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister and highlighted the fruitful discussions: “Hockey India is deeply grateful to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for hosting us. We had productive talks on advancing hockey in Uttar Pradesh, which has a storied history in the sport. The AGM also led to important decisions to support national players and plan future developments. Exciting announcements regarding the Hockey India League and other initiatives are on the horizon for hockey fans.”
This significant decision reflects Hockey India’s commitment to supporting players and strengthening the sport across the country.
