Gonzalo Peillat Eyes Hockey Revival with Hyderabad Toofans in HIL 2024-25

German hockey star and renowned drag-flicker Gonzalo Peillat is set to make a highly anticipated return to the Hockey India League (HIL), representing Hyderabad Toofans in the 2024-25 edition. The league’s much-awaited revival, following a seven-year break, promises to reignite global enthusiasm for hockey, and Peillat is thrilled to be part of this momentous occasion.

Peillat, who debuted in the league with Kalinga Lancers in 2014, was the costliest overseas player in the 2024-25 HIL auction, fetching ₹68 lakh. Sharing his excitement, Peillat said, “The opportunity to play alongside international talent and experience the unparalleled passion of Indian fans makes this league unique. The atmosphere is electrifying, and it’s an honor to be back.”

Reflecting on his early days with the HIL, Peillat fondly recalled playing with young Indian players who have since become national team mainstays. “Witnessing their growth into international players is inspiring. Exposure to leagues like HIL prepares young athletes for the demands of top-level hockey,” he added.

Peillat emphasized the league’s potential to elevate hockey’s global profile. “The HIL can showcase the sport’s excitement on a global stage, encouraging countries to invest more in hockey, especially women’s hockey. Equal opportunities and visibility for women players are crucial for the sport’s growth.”

Off the field, Peillat juggles responsibilities as a sponsor manager at Mannheimer Hockey Club in Germany and invests in real estate, inspired by his father’s expertise in construction. The recent birth of his child has added a personal dimension to his return. “The auction earnings will support my family, especially as I’ll be away for eight weeks during the holidays. It’s a big motivation,” he said.

The HIL’s revival has rekindled excitement among players and fans alike, with Peillat optimistic about its impact. “The league’s return will draw global attention and inspire a new generation of players. It’s great to be back in India, where hockey feels like a festival,” he concluded.
